I'm new to Inkscape but have been using Adobe and so on for years, sick of too many versions and incompability with printers...
So switching to Inkscape portable, so I can take the whole thing there!
But learning however, I do shift+ctrl+l
But although the layers panel shows up, I can see the layers, I presume they are there because I can move the objects around...I got this image from http://www.clker.com are these properly formated to be plug and play with Inkscape?
Thanks

The file is not corrupt, and there are no layers. Layers are not made automatically, and the person who made the original apparently did not feel any layers were needed for such a simple drawing. When you (or someone) moved the eggs out of the basket, you left the highlights behind, if you switch to outline view you can see them floating above the basket. is this the problem? Not sure what you mean by plug and play, the original was also made with Inkscape...
Your mind is what you think it is.

I think I have it figured out, I just need to create layers, so I can put the basket behind the eggs? I need to experiment more with it, just very new at it.

Ok, I've had messages disappear before, but usually I eventually remember that I forgot to click Submit button. But this time, I'm absolutely positive it was submitted, because I remember reading druban's reply that was below mine!
druban, do you remember seeing my message, when you posted yours?

You can create layers, but since you're just starting out with Inkscape i would suggest you get familiar with the idea of stacking order first. Think of your objects as a deck of cards; but you can never put cards side by side, even when it looks that way, one is always above the other! This is the Z-order (as opposed to x horizontal and y vertical). You can move an object in the x and Y axis by dragging it on the canvas, but to move an object in the z order you have to use these buttons in the control bar or the equivalent commands in the object menu. Just select an object, press the buttons and you will see immediately what's going on.

Brynn, i did not see your post, but then I am not sure I would remember unless it was specifically addressed to me... Maybe your post was too good for this world and went straight to a higher plane of existence.Your mind is what you think it is.

Hi Druban,
This is incredible, after years of using Photoshop and Illustrator...
I didn't know there was something else than layers!
Let's hope Inkscape will be like another Joomla or AutoIT for me, open source rocks!
Will try this today, I'm designing some labels for my pickled eggs business in Thailand!
Cheers!
