I have imported a PDF into inkscape and tried ungrouping it so I can use different elements of the PDF. However the PDF is not exploding fully and still has the majority of the PDF in on solid group. Could there be a reason for this and also is there a way of ungrouping complex PDF's.

Would be thankful for anybodies take on this.

How many groups there are depends on the software that created the pdf, it's not unusual to get many groups in pdfs.

In Inkscape just hit the ungroup button as many times is needed. Look at the statusbar, it will tell you how many objects you have in the selection and if there are any groups left.
