Hello
I'm new to Inkscape and am looking to put together a transit map. I've used Visio in the past but am struggling with the gird for the specific effect I'm after. The Axonometic grid is brilliant, but I need to use it at 90 degrees of the default -- so it would have horizontal lines rather than vertical lines. This would give me the 60 degree angles I need to use this particular map.
I've experimented with the "Angle X" and "Angle Z" without luck. Is there a way that I can either --
* Tilt the grid by an arbitrary amount?
* Create a new grid based on a PNG/GIF of the grid that I'm after?
Thanks
Ben
Turning the Grid by a specific angle
Re: Turning the Grid by a specific angle
I don't think you can rotate those grids. However, I think I heard that the next major version release (1.0, yay!) will have the ability to rotate the whole canvas, which I would guess would also rotate the grid. So for that to work for you, I guess you'd have to rotate the canvas, but still draw on it upright....if I understand you correctly. Possibly it's already available in a development version, but I don't really know for sure. Dev versions can be found here https://ci.appveyor.com/project/inkscap ... pe/history, with more info here: https://inkscape.org/releases/master/ Note that dev versions are considered experimental. Some certain features (I couldn't predict which) would be quite stable, others not.
However, there are a few different ways to create grids which are made of actual paths. You'd probably want to put them on their own layer, so you can hide them. There are Extensions menu > Render > Grids. And also Path menu > Path Effects > Construct Grid. Or you could draw a grid outright with paths, Pen or Pencil tool.
Or per your question using an existing raster image, you could trace it with Pen or Pencil tool. You would probably Not want to use Trace Bitmap. Although possibly the centerline trace, which I think is an extension, could work. I'd probably avoid it though. But manually tracing the raster grid should be fine.
I suppose it might be possible to make a grid out of Guides. But I expect it would become quite tedious. Actually I think I tried to make a custom grid using guides once, but it became a major mess! Instead of the 3 angles of the axonomic grid, I was trying to make one with 4 angles. It was a huge mess! But maybe it could work with only the 3 angles?

Re: Turning the Grid by a specific angle
in document properties you can create an Axonometric grid and specify the angles of each axis. This should more or less be what you want. you can also set up default grid settings for new grids in preferences. there is also a render grid extension with multiple options but snapping will be as to objects, not grids
can you show me a pic of the grid you want?

Your mind is what you think it is.

Re: Turning the Grid by a specific angle
I'd use the grid generator in the Extensions>Render menu.

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

It's a long-standing feature request to be able to rotate grids:
