What are you using to view the SVG?

Perhaps it's a problem with that viewer. Trying viewing it in Opera or use Batik Rasteriser. If Batik creates a bitmap version that looks the same as what Inkscape shows then you can be confident there isn't a problem with the SVG or Inkscape.

A lot of viewers don't support the full SVG specification, such as Firefox and even Opera has some limitations.

ooo ok, it could well be a case that the ubuntu viewer doesn't support it, it was just for an icon and I guess that the image viewer only views what gnome can view which might explain the difference as you said if they dont both support the svg format

Thanks for your help

If you want it to display you may find you can get it to work if you stop using something that the viewer doesn't understand. For example, if you're using clips and the viewer doesn't support them, then create your drawing without clips.
