How do I find a live Inkscape tutor?

Postby samccollough » Fri May 13, 2011 7:43 am

Hello. I'm very new to Inkscape and, while I have figured out some things using online tutorials, I know that I'd do much better with a one-on-one tutor. I have a list of specific things that I'd like to be able to do, and the time that it will take me to figure them out with online tutorials is too much! Most people that post on other sites as tutors, even if they know Illustrator, don't know about Inkscape. The tutor wouldn't even have to be local to me - I'm sure LiveMeeting (or equivalent) would work just fine.

Any suggestions? Many thanks,

Sam

Welcome to the forum!

Why don't you post your questions here on the forum? Many find their answers quickly this way.

You can also join #inkscape chat on IRC to get help too ;)

I thought that I had just posted my question here on the forum.

Also, can you tell me more about what is " #inkscape chat on IRC ? " I have no idea what that is.

I meant the questions you'd ask your tutor, you can ask them here on the forum, it's a different medium but it may still be useful.

Here you can find out more about the Inkscape chat channel and how to join in:

I'm not sure if you meant that most people have tutors, or most people are tutors? I would disagree that most people have tutors.
But we are all students and all teachers (tutors) here. We help each other. Some have vast knowledge and skill on Inkscape and mostly answer questions. Others (like me) ask as many as they answer, lol! It's not quite as fast as if you had someone by your side, but if you have read manuals and tutorials and still can't solve a problem, this forum is a great way to get the solution.

We do encourage members to try and solve their problems on their own, before posting a question. So if you are looking to bypass learning on your own, and truly want someone to virtually sit beside you and tell you how to do things, you probably won't find a volunteer here. I suppose you might, but that sounds like something I would want to be paid to do (although I certainly would not offer such a service, because I just don't have that much knowledge about Inkscape).

The next best thing might be video tutorials (http://screencasters.heathenx.org/), because you are watching the work done on the screen and listening to instructions. While the IRC channel would result in faster replies than on this forum, I suspect they will still encourage you to find answers on your own. For example, like we do here, they would give you the general steps or the general idea, and include a link to a manual or tutorial, for you to learn details.

But I certainly understand how it sounds like you're feeling! Here's a drawing I made a while back, to express my desires:

I AM WILLING TO PAY... using paypal, Bitcoin, Primecoin, whatever... I am looking for one on one training/couching to help my wife get the swing of Inkscape. She has already been through some online training using VTC Training. She really needs something more to point her in the right direction. Basically the personal connection. Willing to pay by the hour. There has to be some Inkscaper out there that would like to earn some cash tutoring online... where are these blessed people??? Contact us! We have money and need training!

Have you thought about looking for classes (online or otherwise)? I wouldn't mind compiling a list of Inkscape classes or courses, but I haven't heard of any lately. Although that doesn't mean they aren't out there. I'm sure there must be graphic arts or graphic design colleges or schools that offer classes, where you might be more likely to find tutors.

Does anyone else feel a little discriminated against by the title of this post? What exactly do you have against dead Inkscape tutors? So we talk a little slower...

Ok, that was a joke. (Didn't go near the couching, though! :D )

I am intrigued by how you imagine this setup would work. I teach people to write (English) over the internet, but it seems a little bit of a leap to go to graphics. But possible, maybe with setting assignments and reviewing how well they are completed.... Much easier in person though. Even grade school kids pick up Inkscape chops in just a few weeks.
Your mind is what you think it is.
