linux and sound

so maybe this forum has spoiled me, but so far I have found the linux mint forum to not be overly responsive. Since installing Mint 10 I haven't been able to get my USB speakers to work at all and my 3.5mm jacks give either a lot of static (front) or only mono (rear). If anybody has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Have you tried the Ubuntu forums? IIRC, Mint is based on Ubuntu.
