Hello all.
I have a question regarding layers
I was a user of Freehand, so I have a pretty good idea of how layers work.
I am using Win10 and Inkscape 0.91.
Is the only way to assign a layer to an object, is to select the object, do a right mouse click and go down to move to layer, select a layer name, press move?
That works.
However, I was under the impression in looking at some tutorials, that after selection of an object, one just needs to click a layer name in the palette, or pick one off of the layer drop down down at the bottom of the screen to assign a layer to an object.
That part does not work for me.
Could someone enlighten me as the ways to assign a layer.

To change the layer of already drawn objects, I prefer to use the keyboard shortcuts: select the objects in question then use Shift-PageUp and Shift-PageDown. As of 0.91 these shortcuts can also be modified via the Preferences panel, and you can add a shortcut for the "Move Selection to Layer..." dialog if you prefer a shortcut to the right-click option you've been using.

So, to be sure, with objects already drawn, you can't just click the layer you want them to be on?
I'm OK, with the methods you mentioned. Just wanted to make sure.
I love keyboard shortcuts!
One think Inkscape is missing is the ability to increase/decrease font size with a keyboard shortcut.
At least I can't find it.
Used that all the time in FH.

Clicking on a layer determines which layer new objects will be created on, but doesn't change existing ones. The "Move Selection to Layer..." dialog is the closest equivalent to that approach, but it closes as soon as you apply your choice. You could open an enhancement request on Launchpad for there to be an additional column of buttons in the layer dialog that provides a "move selected items to this layer" capability.
