[solved] Rainbow circle - masking question

Postby yanco » Thu Jun 13, 2013 10:38 pm

Hello everyone,

I've been using Inkscape for a few years now, but now I'm stuck with following problem. Couldn't find anything on google or elsewhere (mostly not sure what to search for). Anyways here is my problem.

I have a circle that is made of color rainbow-like gradient (see attached picture). Now what I want to do is to make the outer and inner edges of the circle transparent in a gradient fashion as well. That is I have transparent inner edge gradient to fully opaque and again gradient to fully transparent outer edge. I hope it makes sense.
I tried to play with masks but I couldn't really make it work (mostly because I never worked with masking before)
Can someone point me in the right direction? I would really appreciate it!

Thanks in advance,

Yanco

Welcome aboard!

You are going in the right direction with masking.
Simply duplicate the object you want to mask, and colour it with a black and white radial gradient.
It works as an alpha channel added to the object you want it to mask:
The white will be opaque, the black will be transparent.
After you drew this masking object, select both of the shapes, and set mask.

Result look similar as on the attachment.

Thank you !

That's exactly what I wanted.
Now I see what my mistake was when trying to apply the masking, thanks to your explanation!
