Anon posts will now require approval [UPDATED]

Postby microUgly » Wed Feb 04, 2009 7:54 pm

Hi all,

I feel the influx in spam on this forum is becoming a waste of our regular visitors time. So, for now, all anonymous posts will have to be approved before anyone can read them.

This means if you are posting anonymously it may take many hours before a moderator is around to approve it. I can appreciate how frustrating the wait will be, but I don't like that ours users have to put up with so much spam as of lately--it's diluting the usefulness of this site. I don't like to make people register to use this forum, but if you do register you won't have to wait for your posts to appear.

Cheers

The new CAPTCHA seems to have stopped the spam on this forum. Anonymous posting without approval has be re-enabled.

I've replaced the phpBB3 CAPTCHA image with a custom one in an effort to trip the spam bots. If the number of spam posts from anon users is reduces the approval process may be lifted. Fingers crossed.

The CAPTCHA appears to have stopped the spam. Anonymous users can now post again without having to wait for the post to be approved.

:D Thanks for all you help with moderating the posts during this time. I know it was tedious.

seems no longer working - IMHO there's increased spam from bots in recent days - I want to propose to turn off anonymous posting again.

I haven't noticed that the spam increased, but there's probably been an increase in mods being away from their computers so maybe that's why you see spam more often.

Maybe microUgly can check captcha logs to see if it's preventing the spamers from posting, if it is then no need to change that :P

There hasn't been nearly enough spam to suggest the captcha has been compromised. I know I haven't been around much so it's probably as prkos has suggested--they haven't been deleted as quickly as normal.

As I post this, over half of the 25 first page active topics are spam. Something's not working.

Unfortunately, persistence can't be stopped--but I'll take a look at what can be done to make persistence less rewarding.
