[solved] how to rotate an object with a gradient in it?

Postby erik1 » Thu Oct 25, 2007 7:02 am

Hi people,
I have not used Inkscape gradients before and I immediately stumbled on what must be a simple one problem.

I set up a rectangle, put a fill colour in there, and set up a gradient. Looks great.
I selected the rectangle and rotated it and Bingo the gradient disappeared and the fill went to went to black.

What should I set to keep the gradient and have it rotate with the rectangle?

That really shouldnt happen. is it showing as being a solid color in the fill dialog? was black one of the colors in your gradient?
only thing I can think of is the option to translate/rotate gradints with the parent object mught be turned off, in which case it could be getting rotated off the gradient to one end of the gradient. to check just look at the third of the four adjust: buttons on the right hand end of the selection tool toolbar.
If not file a bug at the inkscape homepage.

Hi Simarilius,

When I put the gradient in it shows as a gradient in the fill dialog.

The translate/rotate option is turned on.
No neither colour was black. I simply had a colour fill and put in a colour to white gradient.
The actual turning is OK but as soon as I release the turn the fill goes to black.

On checking further.

Make rectangle, put in gradient.
Duplicate rectangle
Select top rectangle and move away.
Deselect and the one you have just moved goes black.

I must see if 0.45 has the same behaviour for me.
Erik

I am using a very recent -dw2 version with win2000.

I have just the standard 0.45 version of Inkscape and gradient rotation works as expected there.

Thats weird, I'm not able to reproduce with SVN compiled using the same dwarf2 libs that the dw2 build you have is using.
can you file a bug if theres not already one about this please?

I have spent a little more time on this.

I removed all my inkscape versions and removed preferences.
Then I reinstalled numerous versions since 071012 onwards and they all show this behaviour. The Inkscape .exe file in these is in the 12-14 MB range.
I also removed and reinstalled the stable version of 0.45 1-1and it behaves normally. The exe file here is 6.7MB.

I am sure it is something stupidly simple. Any suggestions please. Erik.

Use the stable version?

It works fine for me under Ubuntu Linux.

This really isn't the best place to seek answers that relate to software bugs - this forum isn't used by the developers. If you want answers, the best place to ask is on the developers mailing list.

Note
If you want a Gradient to transform with an object, you must toggle on this option using the icon icon that is in the Tool Controls when the Select Tool is in use.
