What am I doing wrong with Pattern Along Path?

What am I doing wrong with Pattern Along Path?

See the pictures below. I'm trying to make the black rectangle with the white rectangle inside it (which is a single group of paths) on the left serve as the pattern for the path on the right. As I show below, I follow the instructions laid out here:

Why does it produce a path with all sorts weird turns and stuff? What am I doing wrong?

I select both the group and the path to draw the group by.

I go to "Pattern Along Path" under extensions and use these settings.

Solved it by making sure the road object was on top.

Hi.

Is that for a simple road shape?
Possibly it would be easier to draw a thin white dashed stroke over a thick black one.
