Hi,
I'm a very new to both Vector graphics and Inkscape, hopefully someone may know of a simple solution to my problem.
I'm running into a problem when creating designs using the 3D box tool. Bascially I have created some stacks of boxes and then coloured separate faces of a boxes, I need to have each colour on a separate layer, but, I can't figure out how to do it.
I've been selecting the face(s) with the 'edit paths by nodes' tool and then using Layer > Switch to Layer Above / Below command, the status bar updates to show the correct layer but if I de-select the face and re-select it, the layer doesn't change.
I have tried grouping the faces too, but this upsets the draw order of the design and doesn't work either.
Any suggestions?

3D Boxes & Layers
Re: 3D Boxes & Layers
A 3D box is a group of 6 objects - box sides. Since a group is also one object it cannot be at two layers at the same time, so all sides have to be on the same layer as long as they are inside the group. You can break the group and move each side separately, but then you lose the 3D box features.
Why do you need to have layers separated by color? Since layers stack one on top of the other it makes sense to keep the top objects in top layers, and bottom objects in bottom layers, to mimic the z-order.

Re: 3D Boxes & Layers
Thanks for the reply.
I need to separate the colours to layers as that is what the cutting company requires. I didn't actually need all the features of the 3D box tool, it was just easier to draw using the tool - I ended up stripping away all the faces and then assigned layers and then altered the draw order...it kinda worked out okay.
