Educational Licence?

Postby lstowe » Fri Sep 12, 2008 2:44 am

Hey there,
I found Inkscape recently and loved it. I am teaching a group of 16-18 year old guys about Vector graphics and need something cheap/free to install in a few rooms that I can use to show them the basics.

Where is the best place to find out info like this? Is there somebody I can email to find out?

Cheers

Inkscape is free software. You already have the licence - it's in the file called COPYING in the Inkscape directory.

I'm not trying to be stupid, but some freeware specifies that 'individual' use is permitted, but when you get to installing it on a larger scale the licence agreement doesn't cover it.

I am possibly after a response from the author/s to say that we are ok to install it without a problem.

But that doesn't apply to Inkscape. Inkscape is distributed under the GPL (the GNU General Public License). It's open source. It's free, as in freedom. You are free to use it, share it, and modify it.

But the licence already tells you that. If you don't want to read the legalese, please at least read the preamble.

I understand what you are saying and wouldn't have an issue with it personally, but my IT department are just idiotic at times. When trying to install a freeware Z80 emulator they actually paid the author money to get a 'licence' even though the thing was f@~king free!

So, I'm basically fighting against some people who will want to see it in writing that the software can be used for educational purposes etc.

I will take the COPYING file and show them and see if this is enough. Thanks for pointing that file out to me BTW. I had not had enough chance to go hunting for it.

You can also point them at
http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... d_under.3F

which is from the official inkscape faq

As one of the authors I can also confirm you can install it on as many machines as you like without charge as long as you comply with the GPL.

Nice to see it being used in Cov too, thats my home town :D
