can't raise/lower object to another layer, Node tool, bug?

Postby brynn » Sun Mar 18, 2012 7:15 am

Hi Friends,
I had to shorten the problem to fit in the title. The problem is that if the Node tool pointer is over a node (so that it's red) then Shift + PgUp or PgDn does not move the object to another layer. This has happened to me countless times. Is it a bug? Should it be reported?

Thanks for your help :D

PS - Solution is to move the Node tool pointer away from any nodes. And I realize that's a simple thing, but it's annoying, and I wonder if it should be reported? Thanks again :D

Hi.

I've tested your issue in Inkscape 0.48+devel r11167 and have observed the following:

With node tool hovering over an active node, there is no difference in behaviour between Shift+PgUp and PgUp, that is next node is selected. Same with PgDown.
I can also confirm that by moving the cursor so that it doesn't hover above any node will change the behaviour so that the object can be moved up or down.

And yes, I suggest you file a bug on this issue.
Please provide a link here, and I can vote on it too :D

Hi Grobe,
So you're saying that PgUp and Shift + PgUp actually selects the next node?? Oh, well look at that -- I had not even noticed that it was selecting the next node!! All I knew was that it wasn't moving the object to the next layer.

Well, this may in fact not be a bug. Now I'm thinking that it....well at least it looks like designed behavior. I'll check the Keys and Mouse Ref.....
Ok yes, now that I know this, I think it looks like designed behavior, and I don't think it needs to be reported at all :D What do you think? http://inkscape.org/doc/keys048.html#d0e3173

The following is sort of off topic (note that the ~suv quote is a link to the message it came from):
Off topic:
I think there is a problem with a lot of the key shortcuts, and this may be another example of it. Apparently there are only a few keys that can be used to change the behavior of the various tools. The developers need someone to make a comprehensive accounting of all the shortcuts, so that they can make some needed changes, and hopefully free up some keys for new features. For example, the Shift key, initially could be used to temporarily disable snapping "on the fly". But if you try to use it while snapping nodes, it draws out any node handles that are retracted. So dvlierop (Diederik) had to disable the Shift key for snapping. Anyway this grow/shrink node selection may be another example where better key assignments could be made. (And actually, as I looked up the quote and URL, I'm reminded that all this discussion all occured in one of your topics )
~suv wrote:What is needed IMHO is an outside view, tediously going through all tool contexts and actions, noting down what each modifier and each combination of modifiers does, as well as listing all hard-coded shortcuts within tool contexts which do not have an associated verb (i.e. can't be configured and customized in the 'keys/default.xml' file).
(I started to make such a list for them, but needed a little help understanding the default.xml document. No one ever answered my questions, I assume because they didn't think I would be the best person to make the list. I still would be glad to do this job, if anyone wanted to answer a few questions for me.)

And this is even more off topic:
Off topic:
I actually have another topic somewhere (Inkscape Ideas, I think) asking if anyone else would like to be able to grow/shrink the nodes only in one direction rather then both directions. And I have yet another one about using the mouse wheel to grow/shrink node selection. I think that what passes for a mouse wheel on my touchpad mouse doesn't work properly for the spatial grow/shrink feature. I've not officially created bug reports on either, but might eventually report one or both. I just hate to annoy the developers by asking for minor or esoteric features. But if they eventually get more support, I'd feel better about making a new report.
