Hotkeys not working in Inkscape on MacBook

I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I have inkscape installed on my work computer which runs on a 32 bit Windows platform. I have no problems using hot keys in Inkscape on that particular computer. However, I also have inkscape installed on at home on my MacBook and my hotkeys do not work whatsoever. Can someone help me please?? I do NOT know code.

Something doesn't work? - Keeping an eye on the status bar can save you a lot of time!
