Okay, I'm a complete noob. Is there any way to make the pencil stop doing that connect the dots thing? I'm trying to just make a dot on the canvas and it keeps making lines.

What are you trying to achieve ? What is the dot you want to draw, for ?

Apparently thats a circle. I can select it with the ellipse tool and get the functionality, and when i convert this "dot" into a path, it has four nodes.

Pencil tool requires holding the mouse button and moving the mouse, otherwise by two separate clicks you will get two noded paths with straight segments. Depending on what you are after it might not be the best tool to use. My guess is the pen tool would come more handy.

This is what I was looking for. I just wanted to click once and make a dot like a programme like Paint It would do.

Fyi, you can change the size of the dots either manually or change the default in Inkscape Preferences (unless some recent change I didn't know about).
