To edit an instance of a symbol, un-link the symbol (similar to clones) then ungroup.

(This is not explicit in the status-bar tooltip).
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

If something doesn't work, look at the status bar at the bottom to get relevant information.

To select a bunch of objects, use the Select Tool while holding down Shift and Alt. This draws a red line and everything the lines touches, gets selected.
