I'm trying to assemble a font, and I'm having trouble splitting the path up without destroying the font. Forgive me if I'm a klutz or bad at forum etiquette with how I present the images, I literally just joined and phpBB is not a forum software I've ever used before. (where's the spoiler tag?) I'm equally new to Inkscape, so if there's some really obvious solution and I'm just being stupid, feel free to point it out, and I apologize in advance.
This is the current file, and how I want each glyph to look. (Corpus language from Warframe.) This is all treated as one single SVG object, as I used the Trace Bitmap tool. I click Break Apart, and...
predictably, this happens, because nothing is tying the inside border of each glyph to the outside of it. After fiddling about with the program for a bit, I've not found a satisfactory way to prevent this from happening. If there's really no way I can make this work, I can put each glyph in individually, but that feels way clumsier than it needs to be. Is there an easy answer for this?

Re: Less blind "Break Apart" action
Hi.
Breaking apart separates every subpaths -including those making up the holes. If you switch the rendering mode to wireframe (Ctrl+5 on the numpad twice) or just rectangle select the paths, the bounding boxes should indicate they are still present.
Rectangle select a charater, then combine the paths together (Ctrl+K). That should "restore" the holes.
For more info, check the "fill rule" section in the manual.
(Might worth to mention boolean operations can produce a similar look but not an exact match.)

Oh gosh, I feel pretty dumb right now. I thought I tried combining the paths, but I didn't select them correctly (curse you, GIMP muscle memory). That did the trick, thank you!
