Inkcut cant find cutter

Postby Brandis » Wed Feb 03, 2016 11:26 pm

Hy...

I've just installed Inkscape and Inkcut so it's my first time using them. We have packaging orders so we need to cut a lot of dielines for testing.
I use a SilverBullet cutter series. On the machine the BR is 34000 and ofc i have set that in the properties in inkut but it seems it just dosent send any information to it.
How i said it's my first time using inkscape and inkcut so maybe i am missing something.
Any help is apreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Sir
I'm just an user of Inkscape like you. I've recently used Inkcut to help to convert some drawings. So, my knowledge it's limited.

- Excuse me but you don't say your OS. Inkcut works better in a Linux System.
- Is your Cutter in the list of supported cutters?:
http://inkcut.sourceforge.net/cutters

- Does your machine work with a proprietary software? If Yes, please check what supported formats recognize. Inkscape can save as SVG, PLT, DXF or even as a bitmap/raster image (PNG). So, just use one of those formats with your proprietary software.

To know more about Inkscape (in general) consult:
the Inkscape Guide

- You surely will have more doubts and questions. You can leave here in the forum. But keep in mind that: This is a forum mostly for users. Inkscape as an open source project doesn't have a official support team (well... you can report bugs). Most of the users works in Inkscape as a drawing, graphic software. Just a part of the users have knowledge of cutters.

- All of above is just my point of view. Probably other users have better advice for your issue.

Greetings

@hulf: the maker community is rather large, but they meet in different places than us graphics people :)
There are probably lots of 'instructables', youtube videos and cutting forums, also local hackerspaces may have people with that kind of knowledge.
Brynn has also adopted a cutting/plotting forum:

Timewaster has even started to make some articles for our website, but hasn't found the time to finish them yet.
A lot of useful info can be found on his web site:

@hulf Hy... First to answer all your questions. I am using latest version of Lubuntu at the moment(as ubuntu is a bit heavy for the pc i am using), so there shouldnt be problems with inkcut compatibility with the OS. And yes my cutter is not in that list at the moment, but as i read there it's a list of cutters that were known to have worked with inkcut, it does not say that they are the only cutters wich work with the softweare. Before installing inkcut i have used SureCutsALot(so yes, SVG files) as the program is bought alongside the machine. The problem is that for about two months the cutter makes significant errors while cutting(different sizes than what i see in softweare, missmatches of the positions of the cuts) so i have installed inkcut to see if the machine still gives such error(so to see if it's a mechanical or a softweare issue).

Also thanks for telling me what info i should display alongside the problem (how i said it is the first time is use both the OS and Inkscape so it aint easy).

@Moini Thanks for the usefull links, i have been looking around for that kind of comunities to wich i can appeal for help.

Hello
It's interesting... In Craft Edge's webpage I see that SureCutsALot doesn't have a Linux version. What I guess is that you worked with MS Windows on your PC. As you say, you are new in Linux and Inkscape.

mmm... well, in Linux, in order to solve your problem, You have to know a little about how to use the Terminal, and some commands, like dmesg and / or lspci, lsusb. Your cutter first has to be recognized by Lubuntu, like it's in Windows. If needed, you will have to install a driver, or even be prepared to compile from source. From my experience in Linux (Ubuntu, Debian), at the end I've managed to solve and use almost all the hardware I've plugged in the computer. But It took me time, days. I'm talking here just from my own experience.

If the OS recognizes your cutter, now you have to configure Inkcut. An important info is to know what kind of communication interface it uses. From there, configure other values... that honestly don't know.

I'm affraid I can't help you more

If you manage to solve your problem, please share here your answer.
