Printer error "no pages found"

Postby livemusic » Sun Oct 18, 2009 3:03 am

Until recently, I could print, no problem. I have not made any changes to my Imac. But now, when I try to print a drawing, it says "No pages found" on the print summary window that pops up when you want to print something. I try to print and my print window (the one that is created when you do a print job), says the operation was "stopped." (I didn't stop it.)

I go back and do a print preview out of curiosity and it gives this error -- Error Launching Preview... failed to execute child process "evince" (No such file or directory)

I've tried this several times over several reboots... fails each time now.

This is an OSX Imac, and I have not made the update to Snow Leopard.

Off topic:
I am wondering…
  • which version of Inkscape do you have installed? The 'evince' problem was solved in rev. 21370 - that's long before any prerelase builds of Inkscape 0.47 were available (pre0 was branched in rev. 21549). OTOH there have been no reports that Inkscape 0.46 even launches on Snow Leopard. I'm puzzled…
Do you use an older development snapshot from modevia (r21262 or r21339)? Or did you build it yourself via Fink or MacPorts?
  • did the printing problems start after installing Snow Leopard?
quick advice:
  • get the most recent prerelease build 'Inkscape-0.47pre3-2.LEOPARD+' - it is confirmed to run on SL, with one caveat though: the python extensions don't work yet.
about the printing issue:
  • What kind of document did you try to print (SVG, PDF, EPS/PS, …)?
  • analyzing any related console messages when the error occurs and possibly re-setting the user preferences would be a next step. The problem could be related to the python extensions failure, depending on your Inkscape version: AFAIK PS/PDF export and printing has changed internally since the release of 0.46 - but I won't search what and when before having any additional hint what the problem is and which version doesn't print anymore ;-)
  • first: please try if you still have the same troubles with Inkscape 0.47pre3 and report back whether it works for you.

oops - I now see I misread your last sentence:
livemusic wrote:This is an OSX Imac, and I have not made the update to Snow Leopard.

so - please disregard my previous comment (I won't delete it though ;-) - my questions now are:
  • OS X is 10.5.8?
  • Inkscape is 0.46-2?
  • Printing fails for all file formats, but only in Inkscape?
  • printer model?
Would you be willing to
  • install the latest 0.47 prerelease version from sourceforge.net to try if the error persists?
Note: this is an unstable version not yet the final release. You can keep both Inkscape 0.46 and 0.47pre3 installed (rename one of them), just better don't run them both at the same time.

[edit]
I am confused which print (summary) windows you mean: does the print dialog of Inkscape show an error message or is it error message from the OS X printing system?

OS X is 10.5.8.

Inkscape is .46, built March 30, 2008.

I am trying to print an .svg file from Inkscape. This is the only program I am having trouble with regarding printing.

The printer is Canon MP620.

I previously made a comment and my new comments are in CAPS... "But now, when I try to print a drawing, it says "No pages found" on the print summary window that pops up when you want to print something. (I'M TALKING ABOUT THE PRINT BOX WITHIN INKSCAPE.) I try to print and my print window (the one that is created when you do a print job), (I'M TALKING ABOUT THE OS X PRINT SUMMARY WINDOW), says the operation was "stopped." (I didn't stop it.)"

From Inkscape, I just tried to print a .pdf file (that I created within Inkscape) and got same error. (I can open this file outside of Inkscape and it does print.)

I guess I could download the newer Inkscape with my brother's help. He's a a programmer. However, if certain things don't work on it, that makes me hesitant. I wish I could just fix this version, I don't know why it quit printing properly.

I haven't experienced the issue myself (0.46 and 0.47pre on OS X 10.5.8, MBP, Brother HL 2035), and a first google search didn't reveal much useful information. But I found a bug report in the Inkscape bug tracker that describes the same problem (Mac OS X 10.5.6, Intel iMac, Canon PIXMA iP4500, 'No pages found…') - unfortunately that bug hasn't a solution, only offering the same advice as I did: 'Could you try a recent prerelease version and see if the problem still exists...'.

It certainly would be better to have some idea about what causes the error message before installing the newer version (though there have been many changes and improvements of the Inkscape printing system internally). I will search the bug tracker once more later today and see what I can find about reported print issues related to 'No pages found…' with Inkscape 0.46.

I spent some time searching different bug trackers (Inkscape, Gnome GTK+ and CUPS) but didn't find anything helpful. The error message "No pages found!" originates from the CUPS printing system which handles all printing on OS X as far as I know. But beyond that - whether it's a bug in Inkscape or one of its included libraries - I can't find an answer nor quick-step-instructions how to fix it.

Some general thoughts:
  • did you 'reboot' you printer as well (besides rebooting the iMac?)
  • did you change the way the printer is plugged in (e.g. plugging it in to an Airport Express/Extreme base station or the ethernet router/modem as opposed to directly using the USB port of the iMac)
  • use this as workaround: Save as PDF, then print from 'Preview' or 'Adobe Reader'
  • file a bug report or add a comment to bug #332637?
  • Try Inkscape 0.47pre4? (The stable version should be out soon though)

sorry to have no other tips, ~suv

I just had this problem too. I'm not sure what fixed it in the end, as I tried two things. One, select Add a New Printer, and let it find itself on the network again. Two, use Printer Utilities to check ink levels, which were blank - i found that it was set for a USB connection, which I changed to Network, whereupon it showed my ink levels, confirming that the printer was online. One of those things must have worked, because the printer started up and now seems fine.
