making polygons for geometry thesis, few questions

Postby whorush » Wed Sep 28, 2011 5:28 am

first, i go to: extensions > render > latex formula and it inserts my formula onto the canvas but it's way out in the far right corner and i need to zoom out ten times to see it. is there a way to make it drop down in the middle or where i want it? i tried shrinking my canvas, didn't work.

also, would you insert the svg file into my latex thesis document? or would you insert a pdf? i found this: "From version 0.48, there is a combined PDF/EPS/PS+LaTeX output option, like XFig has". should i do that? how do i do that, i don't see it in the list?

thanks!

Ah-ha, so you did ask your question here (re your other topic). Welcome to InkscapeForum!

For the most part, I can't answer your questions. But the one about the Latex extension, I probably can answer. Or at lease I will try :D

The Inkscape extensions often draw their product somewhere off the screen, so that you have to look around to find it. (I'm not sure why.) The solution is to just select it and move it to wherever you want it. I'm not familiar with that extension or Latex at all, but my sense of math tells me that perhaps the formula needs different paramenters and/or variables. If that's not the case, then you might not have the canvas at 100% zoom. By default, new documents are opened at 35% zoom, apparently so that the whole image fits on the screen. Personally I think that's silly, but that's my opinion and I'm not a developer. Anyway, it's possible you just need to set the canvas to 100% zoom.

Ok wait, I've had another thought, after reading your question again. So the Latex formula extension puts the formula itself onto the canvas? (I wanted to try it myself, but apparently I don't have that extension.) At first I was thinking it would draw something, like the function plotter. But if it puts a formula on the canvas, then it might be using the Text tool, and it might be that you need to set the font size higher. (Or maybe there's such an option on the extension dialog?)

Also (regarding your other topic) I thought I saw somewhere that there's a chat style forum. Let me get that link, because maybe you could get a quick answer there? Oh, look what I found on the Inkscape website:
"The channel irc://irc.freenode.org/#inkscape is available for IRC users. We have a bridge that allows bidirectional communication between IRC and Jabber. Please note that your nickname has to be registered in the IRC network before you can post anything in the channel." (my emphasis)
It's on this page, where you can also find the other forum I mentioned. Although it does say it's more for development discussions. http://inkscape.org/discussion.php?lang=en

Of course there's no way to predict when someone might be along to answer the rest of your question, or answer correctly, if I didn't quite hit the mark. But I'm sure someone here does know the answer :D
