How to transform an image to vector

Postby etrader » Sun Apr 24, 2016 11:58 pm

I have low resolution drawings composed of lines only. Is it possible to import them into Inkscape and redraw the lines as vector?

I tried trace bitmap, but as it works based on contrast and edges, it creates a vector object of the border of low-resolution pixels. Instead, I wish to turn it into a line vector.

For example, how can I turn this image into a simple line in vector? This is a cropped part of a complicated image. Thus, it cannot be sketched manually.

Manually with the pen tool.

As inkscape doesn't have a single line trace option in the trace bitmap (uses potrace instead).
Centerline tracing can be done with autotrace for example.

I wrote a series of tutorials on converting raster images to vector. They're organized according to what your goal is. Since you haven't said what your project is about, this is the whole series, and you can choose whichever one works for you. (Most of them are about re-drawing the image as vector, rather than auto-trace.) http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/inde ... cles;cat=6

A long time ago, it was possible to blur a pixelated raster image. And then when Trace Bitmap is applied, the result was beautiful. However, Trace Bitmap has lost that ability by now. It's too bad, because in situations like this, it really was very useful.

I don't know if maybe you could install an older version and try it?? You can get older versions from the website, and I would suggest trying 0.46. And if that doesn't work, try 0.45. https://inkscape.org/en/release/

It's not inkscape directly but search for this title and you might find the tips you need for the anti-alias issue your having with that line.

"Public: Technology Reviews : Tracing Color Raster Images" or "Color Quantization"

Also I think there is a generic extension to use imagemagick if I find it I'll update my post.
