Is Inkscape the right tool for weather maps?

Postby geofffox » Wed Mar 23, 2011 6:11 pm

I would like to produce some forecast weather maps. Mainly it's shaded areas as different precipitation types (I assume that's simple) overlayed with fronts (cold, warm, stationary). I've placed some fronts at the bottom of this post (Forget the arrows. They're there to explain wind flow at the frontal boundary).

Is Inkscape the right tool to draw fronts? I know Photoshop and GIMP don't seem to be. Any assistance pointing me in the right direction will be appreciated.

Sure it can. The two ways are using a Modify Path Extension (simplest but destructive) or a Path effect (Nicer but more complicated for the stationary front as it needs two paths overlayed with different patterns and offsets.

I've also attached my svg as a sample.

Thanks. That's just what I wanted to hear. I am a total neophyte with Inkscape, but I'm sure I can find tutorials on those techniques. This was really welcome news.

I don't have anything to add to the discussion, but wanted to put my signature up because it has links to the more prominent guides, manuals, tutorials, etc. :D

Nice demonstration Rob, think you pretty much covered it :D
Only thing I'd add is to explain that the path effect remains easily editable in terms of the shape of the front, whereas the extension result is not as easy to modify later.
