Is it possible to adjust the width in the bezier curve?

Postby RexCarter.69 » Tue May 16, 2017 11:14 am

I am new to inkscape and i have read various posts about the width of the bezier curve/powerstroke feature and i would like to know if it is possible to draw a simple line/curve similar to the width of the diagram connectors? I cannot adjust the width; is this by default or cannot be changed? Thank you for your response, i hope it does not intersect with other posts.
I am currently working on a teacup image for my website and would like to do other inanimate objects.

If you just want a simple path of constant width then you don't need to go anywhere near the powerstroke effect. Simply draw your line with the :tool_pen: tool (I find it easiest to just click the mouse to place my nodes, double-click to finish, then adjust the curves afterwards). The thickness of the stroke can be set using the Fill and Stroke dialog from the Object menu, then adjust the stroke width on the last tab. Alternatively, down in the bottom left of the window you can see swatches for the current fill and stroke colours: next to the stroke swatch is a number indicating the current line width - right click on that for a menu of common options.

The first few articles in my tutorial series cover all this and more, so those might be a good starting point for finding your way around the program.

If you cannot adjust the stroke width of a path by using the fill and stroke dialog, it may be that it already has a path effect applied. This happens when you have upgraded your Inkscape version from 0.91 to 0.92.x - removing the path effect by selecting it, then doing Path -> Remove Path effect can fix it in that special case. For the tool you use to draw the path, make sure that you select Shape: None in the tool controls bar.

I'm not real clear about your question. Here are some possible answers:

You should be able to make the connector lines wider by adjusting the stroke width (Object menu > Fill and Stroke > Stroke Style tab > Width). It will make the width equal along the length of the line. Connector lines cannot have a variable width.

If you want to have a variable width connector line, just use the Pen or Pencil tool and apply either the powerstroke LPE or Pattern Along Path LPE. However, if you do that, it will not behave like a connector line.

The Connector tool is meant for drawing the lines between rectangles, or other shapes, like on a flow chart. I can't think of any use for them drawing a tea cup. You should be using either the Pencil or Pen tool for those.

If you're asking how to use the Pen or Pencil without the powerstroke, then change the Shape to None (on the control bar).

It sounds like you could benefit from an introductory tutorial. Try this

Is there something different in latest versions of Inkscape? I can't get the width to work, in Path effects editor.

Look here (the link goes to exact spot - 3:12). He changes the width of the curve in Pattern along path effect. When I do it, nothing happens.

It works for me with 0.92.2.

Changing the width doesn't do anything if you haven't pasted the pattern yet. Could you maybe not have pasted it yet?

Really would need to see your SVG file, to figure out where things are going wrong.

I haven't pasted anything, but neither did the guy in the video. He just used Bezier tool to draw a curve, and then with Path effects>pattern along path changed the width.

Then make sure to also copy the settings of the Bézier tool - it's probably set to already apply a shape to the path.

I did everything he did, and it doesn't work.

The weird thing, though, is that if I draw a shape, copy it, and the use Bezier with "from clipboard" setting, it works fine, pattern along path is automatically applied (of course), and I can change the width.

That's how it works.

Some of the other modes may have changed to use Powerstroke (if you're not both on the same Inkscape version), which has different nodes to regulate the width (they are pink).

Which mode specifically were you trying to use to get a PaP effect?

(btw. you can check the type of path effect on a path if you look into the status line, or open the path effects dialog)
