I am having a weird problem printing from Inkscape 0.48.1 in Windows 7. I see this issue on 2 different printers, one is a fairly new Canon MX870 and the other is an old Samsung ML-1710 that I print to via CUPS/Samba on a Linux server. So each printer is set up in a very different way, yet still has problems printing.

The problem I am seeing is that if I set the document size in Inkscape to US Letter (8.5 x 11 inches) and try to print my drawing, printing fails.

The Canon driver pops up a window that says "A paper size that cannot be fed from the cassette was selected" and forces me to cancel the job, while the Samsung fails silently - nothing prints, and I actually have to turn off/on the printer to get it working again.

I did some poking around, and the problem seems to be related to the fact that the Windows print drivers for both printers think that Inkscape is trying to print a "custom" page size, and not US Letter. If I explicitly set US Letter in the printer preferences before clicking Print, then both printers work and the drawing prints with no issue. But if I don't go into the preferences, and just click Print, then printing fails.

I tried playing with various document sizes, and it seems like smaller documents will print ok, but anything close to the actual physical page size in the printer fails.

Has anyone seen this before?

Yes, and I am using a Canon too. Alarming at first. I think - and I might be quite wrong here - that Inkscape has some code in it that originally was written with only A4 in mind and that code has not all been converted...

Possibly an upstream bug with the Windows port of the GTK+ print module?

Thanks for the info. Until this gets fixed, the workaround is to go into the printer preferences and manually select the page size each time you print.
