Quick & dirty way:

Not exactly the artistic way, but easy.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

You can probably find a font like that, where you wouldn't have to do much more than just type the text.

SVG fonts could do that, I guess. Multi-colored :) (but they won't work in Inkscape)

@ilzaf:

The logo you provided is clearly "hand drawn". The white letters were drawn, then outlined with black, then outlined with white and placed on a black background. At some point, the grey details were added to provide somewhat of a 3-d quality.

There is no way to just type and get that custom image, but for a fast composition, a brush style text could be typed and layered with stroked copies to suggest the hand-drawn style.

Well there are fonts that give that kind of layered appearance. I realize the example is curved (as a whole), and underlined. So some extra work would be needed.

They only asked how to make that effect. If they had asked specifically how to draw exactly that image, of course it would be a lot of work.

Here's an example of a layered font. I don't have time to search for one that looks like the example given by the op, but I'm sure there must be something pretty close. http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/baselinefo ... ty-circus/

Theoretically a layered font could work, and, could work better than any other automated methods since all cusp corners could be chiseled.
However its unlikely for such a simple effect that a complete 4 layered font would exist.

Building up on the concept, instead of duplicating objects, for a live effect, cloning may work. The 3D shade part would be a bit tricky though, using a clone to mask another clone.

Other option is using filtering. That's a bit of an overkill as well since for equal offsetting in every direction you need to rely on Gaussian blurs.
(With the downside that it can only draw rounded corners.)
By filtering it would be the easiest preserving the text editable while having the visual effect added.
