Clipboard Issues with Inkscape under windows...

Postby ryanlerch » Tue Jun 12, 2007 8:12 am

i was wondering if anyone else has funny clipboard issues with inkscape under windows (im using XP)

the main problem is that when im writing up a tutorial, i like to screenshot the inkscape window(no tools, just printscreen button) but when i go to paste the contents back into inkscape it does not work... i have to go to the GIMP, paste it in there, and save it then drag it into inkscape...

does this happen for anyone else?

and should i submit a bug? i tried looking in the tracker for this, but could not find anything....

oh, and before anyone says a smart comment like - "change your OS", im sorry that is not an option

:P

Hi Ryan!

The clipboard not functioning under certain circumstances is a known and reported bug (see bug http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.ph ... tid=604306 and feature request https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.p ... tid=604309 for details).

It happens for me too (I have Win XP) and it can be quite anoying when working...

i was just chatting with ishmal on the #inkscape IRC channel, and he said the same thing, that pasting a BMP stream from the clipboard is not supported in inkscape yet, but he thinks it could be an easy thing to do... so fingers crossed :D

I had noticed this myself, but assume it was by design.

But, on a related note, if you're taking lots of screenshots you might be interested in Screenshot Captor (Free). It can save you the step of having to paste into GIMP to save a screenshot.

IrfanView can do the same thing. It can either be used via keyboard, like CTRL+F11 for example. Or it will even do timed interval screen shots.

You can also choose to automatically load the image in the viewer, or automatically save to a specified location.

To bring up the capture dialog, hit "C."

I know previously, I was able to CTRL+X an SVG object from Inkscape, and paste into another Inkscape window.

Now, I have lost that ability. Not sure why. I guess I have to remove my SVG stuff by editing the markup? :|

Oh, and by removing I mean putting all my little icons into the same file.

You need to make sure that the 2 inkscape windows are from the same instance.
So once you have inkscape open, open all the rest of the files you want by using the open dialog, not by double clicking in explorer.
if you double click in explorer, it will start a 2nd inkscape, and they wont play nice when it comes to the clipboard.
The clipboard in general could use some TLC, but for now thats the way round it.

Ah, OK! Duly noted.

That must have been what I did at one point that got everything Cut & Pasting just fine.

As always, thanks for the tips, Simarilius.

Digging up an old thread because this issue is still not solved after 5 years, and moreover, I only found this thread by accident as googling several different interpretations of the complex symptoms did not lead me here. After googling and not finding anything, I continued working and noticed additional behavior that led me to more understanding of the issue, this thread, and a workaround.

Symptoms: copy/pasting multiple large bitmaps from external applications into Inkscape in succession does not work, however for small bitmaps it does work (most of the time, there is something random going on here). The threshold is unknown, but for bitmap streams sized 200x200 is fine but for bitmaps sized 2000x2700 it's not fine.
Other possible interpretations of the symptoms I had (included to redirect google searches here): 'pastes old clipboard contents', 'local clipboard does not update from external', 'how to force update clipboard', 'clipboard bitmap size limit'

Workaround: Between every bitmap you want to paste into Inkscape, select copy, AND PASTE, a vector object inside Inkscape.
