Hi everyone,

first of all I want to apologize for my bad english. I hope you will understand my problems.

I want to achieve a text which looks like flames - I managed it half a year ago but unfortunatly I can't remember how i did it. I've got the svg file with some text, but now I need some other content. You can see a png made from the svg here:

How it's done:
1) Create some Rectangle and create a filter for the fire (see http://chrisdesign.wordpress.com/2008/03/06/creating-real-fire/)
2) Create the text with the inkscape texttool (and duplicate it for Step 4)
3) Combine them somehow --> Here I need your help. Unfortunatly I forgot how I did it!
4) Blur the duplicate and make it grey
5) add a black background

What I tried to make it work:
Make Paths out of text + rectangle and combine them with the pathtools. Unfortunatly intersection (strg+*) could not be performed - inkscape reported "one of the objects is not a path - boolean operation failed".
There has to be something i have to do before the boolean operation - have you got an idea?
If someone need the existing svg for some kind of look things up or so please response, so I can upload it somewhere.

Edit: Applying the Filter on the text fails, too.

Why/how did applying the fire filter to the text fail?

The text would need to be converted to paths before using Path Intersection. Then Ungroup. Then you'll need as many rectangles (with filter applied) as letters, and do Path Intersection once for each letter. I think it would be better to just appliy the filter to the text, but I don't understand how or why it didn't work.

Hi,

the filter consits of three elements:
1) Turbulence (Base Frequency 0,020/0,08, Octaves 1, Seed 373)
2) Color Matrix (0/0/0/0/1\\2/0/0/0/0\\0/0/0/0/0\\3/0/0/0/0)
3) Gaussian Blur (Standard Deviation 0,0/14,1)

Trying to implement your suggestions results in:

Oh ok, I think your filter isn't properly finished yet. And I am NOT very proficient with filters. But every one that I've examined has a primitive on the end (at the bottom of the list), which connects it back to the right side, usually to Source Graphic or Source alpha. Just experimenting, I added the Composite primitive. (I think Merge might also work, but I didn't try it.) Then I dragged the 2nd....I'm not sure what it's called, but it's kind of a little arrow or triangle. Drag it over to Source Graphic (just like the one on top - Turbulence). Then look down to the Effect Parameters tab, and see a dropdown list for Operator. For some reason, it automatically had Over selected. But when I used "In", it put the filter effect inside the text. But I tried them all, and I actually liked the Atop option too. It looks cool over the black text. Here, I'll upload the file with my edits. The successful text is off to the right, outside the page border. Or quite possibly you can find something else that works.

Also, to use Path Intersection, try converting the rectangle to a path. But you might be happy with the filter tweak, and not need to use it.

Thanks for this wonderful solution - it works perfect!
In oposition to the solution i found half a year ago you can easily edit the text with no problems and the fire is still there.
