Copy Command

Postby Decahedron5D » Tue Dec 21, 2010 12:17 pm

I used to press ctrl + C to copy then ctrl + V to paste. Since loading the latest program, the same process only produces a bit image, not a line image. Have I accidentally redefined something or is this the mode of the new program. I know I can get a line image with ctrl + D, but I find copy and paste useful too.
Cheers :tool_star:

You don't tell, but I just assume that you are using a Mac? ;)

Please read this earlier comment «Mac Snow Leopard?» for details and what to change in the X11 preferences to work around this conflict between X11/Xquartz and Inkscape 0.47 and later versions (did not affect 0.46 which had no support for the system clipboard).

Thanks for the response ~suv. Guilty as charged - Mac user. MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Cor Duo, 1GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM, OS X 10.5.8, X11 XQuartz 2.1.6 (xorg-server 1.4.2-apple33, Inkscape 0.48 but I think I had 0.46 before. Quite a mouthful when you write it all out.

I followed the link you gave but on loading preferences I found I only had 3 tabs for Input, Output and Security and none for Pasteboard, so I guess our X11 architectures are different. I checked for new X11 downloads to find the latest will be available early January, so I think I will wait till then, then download GIMP too :D I can survive using ctrl + D till then. I had not used it before and am finding quite useful. Every cloud has a silver lining :geek:

No need to wait for Xquartz 2.6.0 to be released for Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. It is a known issue that Apple's X11/Xquartz 2.1.6 on Leopard is missing the preferences pane for the pasteboard: download and install the localization updates which will add the missing pane and thus allow you to change the pasteboard preferences.

If you plan to use GIMP on OS X too, I would recommend to not install a development version of Xquartz [1] - both Inkscape and GIMP work fine with Apple's X11 2.1.6.

[1] The GIMP on OS X package (intentionally) depends to a greater degree on the installed X11 libraries than Inkscape (which includes most of them in the application bundle) and therefore doesn't officially support Xquartz versions (the development branch of Apple's X11/Xquartz from xquartz.macosforge.org).

Just to update you, since festivities got in the way :D
I loaded the localization update but so far, the preferences pane has not changed. Have tried several times but so far it is not making a difference. I will have a more detailed look later. Have spent quite a few hrs trying to sort this. I do not know if this is connected but, while I was looking through the manual, I came across Interpolation, which would be useful to me, but there is no Effect bar and I cannot find Interpolation!!!
Will have another go at loading preferences.
I also still have not found what image extension works on this site. I was going to load an image to the forum but nothing I tried was accepted and I tried 12 different file types.

Which manual have you been looking at? [1]
The 'Effects' menu was renamed to 'Extensions' back in version 0.47. Besides the tutorial 'Inkscape: Interpolate' in the Help menu, take a look at the current manual (draft) for Inkscape 0.48 about the extension 'Interpolation'.

[1] Ah, I see it - the tutorial included with Inkscape needs to be updated too (thx for the hint! ;) )

There was me innocently thinking the tutorial that came with the program would actually relate to that release  I liked the Inkscape tutorial because you can play with the tools directly on the page or look to see what setting they used for a particular effect. Thank you, I have now found "interpolation and am playing :D

I have included a couple of examples of the type of thing I am trying to do. I did these with a lot of copied segments but would prefer a continuous even spectrum. The round one would be white in the centre, running through the rainbow and finishing black at the outside. The CoSpiPent, I wanted the spiral arms to taper from the outside to the middle with gradation from black through colour to white with 10 different colours for each arm, preferably with the spiral in Golden Mean ratio. They are going on here - http://theonetruefactsociety.wetpaint.com/page/THE+KEY

Looks like I have found how to post images. I tried so many times before. Each little success is a thrill :geek:
