select one whole path with one click

Postby saxsuau » Sat Aug 04, 2012 12:20 am

I would like to discover how to select a whole path at once. Imagine an "O", with mouse selection it's imposible to select the internal circle and point by point is time consuming. I've used many vector programs (my beloved Calamus mainly) and with a key combination you can select a whole line (with lots of points, not a segment). If somebody can enlighten me I would be very grateful. For now I'm exporting and working on another app.
thanks

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

There are a couple of ways to do it, and you can use whatever works best for you. After a path is selected with the Node tool: a) you can do Ctrl + A to select all the nodes in the path; or b) you can drag a selection box around the path. There are various other ways to select more than one node at a time, but less than all of them. You can see Help menu > Keys and Mouse Ref, if you like to use key shortcuts. Or otherwise the manual can be helpful, at Help menu > Inkscape manual.

with the node tool :tool_node: you can click on a path, making it active but not selecting it. Hovering your cursor over a node and turning the mouse wheel with ctrl you can add to your selection node by node in order of connectivity, i.e. you can eventually select every node in your subpath of the 'O' but not any nodes from the outside path. Turning the mouse wheel only adds nodes to your selection based on proximity to the node you are hovering over - this selects from all nodes in the path, if it has more than one subpath the connectivity is not a factor.
Note that if you are not hovering over a node these combinations are for navigation and zooming in your canvas.

Read all about it and more here http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-Editing.html#Paths-Editing-Node

Thanks for the fast reply, the "scroll" solution does the thing, only problem is that you must "switch" with mouse and tablet/touchscreen pen, still no "one click" solution.
Resume RTFM. (I've readed the suggested page but, I'm a bit dumm/lazy).
Sorry I'm old and have readed hundreds (really) computer manuals since '87. Since SuSE 11.2 and Ubuntu 9 Linux (KDE4, Gnome3) is "getting entropic" but this is another history.
Anyway INKSCAPE is a good multiplatform app.

I guess you still have one hand resting on the keyboard? If so, what about this: select a single node of the sub-path you want to select (with the tablet pen), and type 'Ctrl+A' -> all nodes of that sub-path are selected (without requiring to switch input devices).

Huh??? A diligent read of a few lines of text in the keyboard shortcuts reference section would have been sufficient to learn about the difference of 'Ctrl+A' (with and without already selected nodes) and 'Ctrl+Alt+A' in the node tool context when node-editing paths with several sub-paths and wanting to select all nodes of one (or more) individual sub-paths quickly.

Really? Did you mention to select a node of the sub-path first? (else 'Ctrl+A' simply selects all nodes across all sub-paths…)

well, well, well
lots of movement, I feel dummier :-).
Yes, "select the point" is the thing, anyway I realized that I have no more pressure sensitive tablet (works in GIMP), just a new issue to add at my last year's linux struggle. Don't bother just a comment, don't start new advices or I'll feel even dummier (yes File>Devices>wacXX>select...restart) should be some "nested" editable X/udev file or similar.
A "diligent read" of udev tricks, of fglrx/nvidia installing (no 3d accelerarion since last update -as usual-), of nepomuk disabling, of jack installing, of KDE4 plasma and all Ksomething apps, of GTK on QT apps, of... But YES is clearly explained on the shorcuts page so dummy dummy I am (that's why I suscribed that forum -my 1st one-).
Please don't blame me, english is not my native tongue, you've been very hepful.
All the best
ferran soley (I'm not anonymous)
