help with cutting inside intersection

Postby nick5454 » Tue Apr 02, 2013 1:02 am

I am trying to use 2 rectangle paths to cut an intersection off. I am trying to form a path for a helicopter that was originally outlined with rectangles. So I have 2 paths that intersect and I want to only keep the outside lines to form a new path. See the picture below. How do I select 1 line and trim the other based on the intersection?

Convert the outlines to path.
You always get more accurate drawings if you use no outlines, just fill only.

Zoom in to the intersection of the lines.
Switch to the :tool_node: .
Select the first of the two paths that you want to cut and double-click at the point of intersection, this adds a node there, now in the control bar for the tool click on the little button showing one node becoming two unconnected nodes. Or use the shortcut SHIFT B.
ESC twice to deselect, and select the other path and go through the same procedure.
Now you have cut both the paths at one point. Zoom out and look for the other place you have to cut them.
Once those sections are gone you can select both paths, switch to the :tool_node: again and just select the two endpoints of each path that are on top of each other and press SHIFT J or the button in the control bar that shows two unconnected nodes becoming one.
Do this for the other location. Now you have cut and removed the unwanted parts of two paths and then joined the two paths into one at the cut ends.
Your mind is what you think it is.
