Hi guys,
I hope someone can help me. Say I have a photograph ad I want to trace the outline of the object, how do I go about doing so? In GIMP, for example, I can create a white layer on top of the image, reduce it's opacity, trace the image below then delete the original layer and I have my tracing! I know you can have Inkscape automatically trace the image, but this doesnt always give me the results I'm after. Can I, with Inkscape, trace an image the same way that I have described how I do it in GIMP?

Welcome to InkscapeForum!
Pretty much the same way as GIMP

-- File menu > Import
-- Reduce the opacity of the photo object or of the layer it's in
-- If you reduce the opacity of the layer, you'll need to create a new layer to draw on. But if you reduce the opacity of only the photo, you can stay and draw in the same layer
-- When you're finished, you could either delete the photo, or hide the layer (if you put it on its own layer). It's nice to hide the layer, because if you ever need to edit, you won't have to bother re-aligning it to the drawing
Happy drawing

Thanks for the welcome and reply.
So you have to import the picture, then you can change opacity! I was just dropping the image on to the Inkscape window, which is why it wasn't working out for me.
