point as guide

Postby elecman » Sat Feb 14, 2015 9:31 pm

Is it possible to make a point object which is used for snapping only? Sort of a guide line but instead of being a line, just a point only.

Guide lines have points which can be snapped to (origin of guide) as well, but it clutters up the screen a bit when I need a lot of snap points.

I might use yellow circles and snap to their centers. I'd put them on their own layer to easily toggle them on/off. Maybe even use different layers or colors for specific types of points. The objects or layers can have partial opacity to reduce obstruction.

The rub is that precise positioning of those circles is easiest with guides. :-\ So, You could set guides, snap circle center to intersection (or guide origin), then remove the guides.

Instead of a color circle, maybe a custom object, again used on a separate layer...

This object is just two paths:

My guess is that you will become very adept at switching guide, snap and layer visibility as your workflow evolves. Check the help for keyboard shortcuts. ;-)
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Thanks, using layers should work just fine.

All sorts of things can be snap targets! Nodes, bounding box center, corners, sides, side mid-points, paths, guides, guide origins, grids, rotation centers, path/segment mid-points, and various and sundry handles, and a couple of other things, that I can't remember at the moment.

For your current solution (guide origins), you can hide the guides when you don't need them for snapping. Either View menu > Guides or Shift + \ (backslash). Or I think with the new stable 0.91, clicking on the rulers toggles the guides both off and on. In versions before 0.91, you can click on the rulers to show the guides, but have to use Shift + \ to hide them.

Using actual shapes is not an option because they show up in the SVG which I use in a game. But adding it to a different layer and disabling it when exporting might solve that.

Quickly enabling and disabling the guides is also a good idea.

I made a feature request for point guides and it was suggested to have a feature to not show the guide but only the anchor point, which also is a great idea, as long as the anchor point could be resized to something bigger.
