How to close a path or smth to be done

Postby kruppp » Mon Dec 24, 2012 9:09 am

Hello to everyone
This is my first post in a very simple and bad English, because it is the first time I have to ask for a help in English related to graphics editor software.

As you see on an attached screenshot I have some letter with a unclosed path or something like that. Anyway, what I simply wish is to close it and have all letters with a closed path, or a line at letter's border, so that I will be able to fill my letter with some colour - because I can't do it now; well, let's start with 'E'.

Thanks :)

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Is that an English letter E? If it is, then it appears that you're using a kind of font which only shows the shadow of the letter. If you change the color, as you've probably already learned, it just changes the shadow, because that's all there is to the letter. So there's nothing you can do to put color on the main part of the E. Well, not "nothing". You could draw the rest of the letter, so that you'd have a path to fill. But better would be to find a different kind of font.

If that's not an English letter E, you should be able to click on any color in the palette (or use Fill and Stroke dialog) and change from black to whatever (as long as it's selected, as you've shown in the screenshot).

Oh, sorry :))
Right, it is 'E', and it says actually 'DIE ANTWOORD'!
Look, I got it from a conversion from raster to vector, see attached file. I want to have a yellow part become again in colour (I don't need yellow, I will need white), and know it is nothing, only black part can be selected, but I don't need to make any changes with black. So, any suggestions? How can I draw it, I can't find the way, because if I draw I get some another new separated object created!
And if you have some more time, you may convert it to vector again by yourself, I just don't know, maybe I can select some options rather than carrying on with simple auto-editing.

I did something again with other preferences - see attachment, though it is not that ideal and lines are not that accurate and smooth/straight as it was with my first attachment when I didn't change any preferences - default preferences weren't changed in my first with unclosed path.

I think that I still don't understand the problem. What preferences are you talking about? Do you still have a problem, or is it now solved?

Since that text uses all straight segements, with no curves, you can do some node editing to keep all the lines straight. When you use Trace Bitmap, it does tend to make sharp corners rounded, and sometimes rounds straight lines. But with a little node editing, you can fix it. So for example, where you see the letter "i" only capital "I", it has 6 nodes. You can delete the nodes inbetween the corners, because really, only 4 nodes are needed. Then after you've removed all the unneeded nodes, select them all, and click "Make selected segments lines" button on Node tool control bar. It automatically retracts all the nodes handles, and makes straight segments.

If you want to make really, really perfect, you could use Guides to set up the proper height and width for each letter, and snap nodes to Guides and Guide intersections. First snap the guides to the clues that the black parts give you, then the letters will be perfect.

But the color part and the black part will always be 2 separate objects. You could group each pair of black and color. And then group those, if you need to move the words around.

Let me know if you need more info, because I'm not sure if I understand the problem now.
