How to put text on anypart of the path

Postby LT72884 » Wed Apr 10, 2013 2:23 am

Ello all. I am trying to make a business card for my wifes piano studio. I have a flourish that i made on the card. you can see it on the image below. I want the text to go along the path, but every time i select the text, the curve and then select text>to path, it only places it along a specific part near the very end of the thick stem. how do i choose where it puts the text along a curve?

here is the image of the card. i want to be able to decide where the text actually goes on the curve.

thanks

There may be a couple of ways. You could try centering the text. It's probably left justified by default. If centering puts it too far to the right of where you'd like it to start, I'd go back to left justified, then simply add spaces in front of the text, until it's in the right place.

Hmm, i tried doing that but the curve of the text matches the steepest part of the curve rather than the smoother slopes of it. in this next image, you can see the text around the stem, but i want it more in the center following that "S curve" shape. I cant seem to figure out how to select a certain part of the curve to have the text follow

thnaks

Try with adding some blank spaces before "Amanda`s..." (press space couple of times).
For fine tuning, activate text (when cursor is blinking), hold Alt and press left or right arrows on keyboard.

Still, if you would prefer to put text on a specific part of the curve - you`ll need to cut it out from the duplicate of the curve, place text and then fit it on the whole curve.
:tool_zoom: <<< click! - but, those with a cheaper tickets should go this way >>> :!:

If adding spaces doesn't work, you could draw a separate path for the text, right on top, or slightly above the spiro spline line, except just a regular path. Then it won't get funky on the end. Then make the separate path transparent or zero width, after you apply the text. In fact, if you make the separate path start right at the place you want the text to start, you won't have to worry about adding spaces!

Just to add to Maestral's post - you can also use the Ctrl + the up and down keys to get it closer down on the scroll to look better.

one of question. how would i turn the flourish design into a dotted line rather than a single thick line? basically, i want to make another curve but make it dotted.

thanks

Uummm....you mean the flourish where you want to put the text? The flourish is made with a spiro spline. You can't have a dashed or dotted spiro spline (at least that know of). You can make any regular path show with a dashed or dotted line. Just draw the path, and go to Object menu > Fill and Stroke > Stroke Style tab > Dashes, and choose from the dropdown menu. Or I suppose there must be a way to make a custom dot/dash line, perhaps using Pattern Along Path, if you don't find one that you like in the menu.

Here's yet another way to try, it's basically the LPE only don't need to bring up the editor.

I'm curious - (Brynn and others) - have you used this method much? I recently found a YouTube video about it, which is really old, so I suspect this was the ancient way of doing LPE's? I have been playing with the method, it can be frustrating, and not all fonts work with it, but it's a nice and quick way of manipulating text, and I like that it is NOT connected to any object.
