Text is invisible.

Postby yuliya38 » Sun Apr 10, 2011 7:57 am

I created a picture in GeoGebra that I would like to use as an illustration in a LaTeX file. I exported it as an svg file and opened it in Inkscape, in order to add labels to the figure. I tried adding text, but it was invisible. The text box grew as I typed, but no text appeared. I looked at the XML, and it's there. I saved the file as a PDF+LaTeX, and the text did turn out fine.

Welcome to the forum!

It may be that you are trying to type on a hidden layer. Another possibility is that you have your Text tool set to "Last used style" (Inkscape Preferences > Tools > Text) and the last time you happened to use the Text tool, you set it for full, or almost full transparency.

If you can post an example SVG we can probably work out what it is exactly thats misbehaving.

I'm really confused now. When I try to add text in inkscape, it does not show up. However, if I close the file and reopen it, the text appears. So because of that I don't think it has to do with invisible layers or transparency settings. In fact, some of this was done on brand-new installations of inkscape.

I'm attaching one file where text now magically appears, and one that is straight from GeoGebra, where I don't seem to be able to make text appear...

AH-HA!

I think my file will explain better than I can. But for some reason, the text is being place beneath your white rectangle. I can't explain why this is happening, but it may have something to do with the Root Layer, although I'm mostly guessing about that. Normally, afaik, each new thing drawn on the canvas is drawn on top of everything else. But for some reason, it's under the white rectangle (and everything else).

Thanks. That seems to be the issue, but does anyone have any idea why this is happening? As annoying as it is, I have now been able to deal with this by saving and reopening the files...

Hhhhmm, well after I saved the file (with my changes to reveal the text) it now opens with the text on top, as it should be. So I downloaded the original file again. I tried raising the text to the top, and it didn't work (possibly because Inkscape thinks it IS on top??). BUT, I was able to lower the white rectangle below the text. Try and see if that will work for you as well. If so, it will save you some time as well as aggravation :D

As I said before, I don't know why this is happening. At first I thought it might have something to do with the "root layer", but it also might be something about the way GeoGebra saves or exports the SVG. This is the first time I've ever heard of GeoGebra, so it may be that no one is familiar enough with it, to venture a guess. Or maybe someone else will come along soon and be able to offer more info.

But hopefully it will work for you to lower the white rectangle, and the reason won't be so important to you being able to finish your work. Cross fingers....Image

Ok, I had the problem of invisible text - perhaps different from the problems above - and accidently found a simple workaround.

After typing the text, at the bottom right of the screen click the opacity down one click from 100, et voila, the text appears. Now you can click it back up to 100.

Odd.

New to Inkscape. My experience regarding this matter in case it helps. I used this program to add text to a blank .pdf form (PDF 1), and then saved it as a .pdf (PDF 2) with the intent to add more text later. However, it would not allow me to do so. Specifically, typed characters became invisible once I exceeded the original number of typed characters. So, I tried to save the .pdf file (PDF 2) as an .svg file as remedy. However, same result. However, when I opened the original blank .pdf file (PDF 1), added text to it, and then saved it as an .svg file, when I opened that later, I was able to add more text to it. In short, it appears that if you want to be able to edit a .pdf file more than once, you need to save it as an .svg file to do so.
