Font Organizer

Postby Kjohrf » Wed Oct 21, 2009 3:03 pm

When you install more and more fonts, it gets very tiring trying to find a certain type of font in a long list.

It would be great if Inkscape could allow you to organize fonts in folders of your own choice (e. g., san-serif, display, script).

If you work in Linux:

“Fonty Python”

Fonty Python is a font manager for Gnu/Linux. If you want to temporarily install fonts on a per-project basis, you may want to have a look! Fonty is available in the Debian and Unbuntu repos.

In "Applications"/Add/Remove Programs/Grafik
or in the terminal:
sudo apt-get install fontypython

Thanks for the ideas. I want something in Inkscape itself so I don't have to scroll through an immense list.

In the meantime, though, I spent a few hours and made a table in Inkscape. I wrote the name of each font family in it's own font.
It's a bit crowded on a letter-sized printout, but it works. It's up on my wall for easy reference.

 Where are the Inkscape fonts stored?

I have deleted A LOT of fonts by mistake. Playing around with a downloaded font organiser.

But, in Inkscape, they are ALL still there, and usable. ??????

Inkscape uses only fonts that are installed on the computer. I've never used a font organizer, so I'm not sure how they work. Possibly you just deleted them from the font organizer, but not from your computer?

[b][b]Brynn

Just checked.

Control panel > Fonts. 47

Inkscape 232. The inkscape list on the left, does not display the typeface in their unique character image. All the names and samples are in (sans serif).

I kid you not. They have to be somewhere . . . am looking . .

Fortunately I have back up of these 232, and then some, on a USB stick. But it is not in at the moment.

( ~ Much as I like Inkscape, I think this item is pretty useless anyway, as they are too small to see, but that is bye the bye. Hence I wanted to use a font editor.
Then I can go straight to 'Script', or whatever, and choose. )

Regards.

The Font editor has already been deleted.

Brynn

'Tis with a red face I submit this post.

There is a small SDSD, permamently inserted.
There is an Inkscape file with all the fonts on.
I was attempting to do what the guy above had done.
Namely, type all the fonts, in their own characters.
Sort them in columns.
Print.
And use as a ready reference.

I do apologise for this hiccup.

It seems that Inkscape is using this file as it's font base (?)

Having said that, most of the fonts displayed in the page, are not in character any more, but have reverted to sans serif.
But that does not matter. I will re-do it. I am wary now, of font editors.

Regards.

Well, no need for too red a face. I didn't really understand what you were doing anyway, since I don't use a font organizer. I think fonts are handled much differently in Linux and/or Mac, and I only use Windows. It seems like I've read that with one or both of those non-Windows systems, you can have certain fonts only for Inkscape.

Somehow, those fonts on that Inkscape fonts list that you found, must be installed, even if you have deleted them from elsewhere. I don't think what you're describing could happen in Windows. But again, this is not an area I know much about.

Anyway, I'm glad you figured things out :D

I would really appreciate to have more comfortable Font Organizer in Inkscape.
Not only for creating new svg images, but also for editing images from other SW. Inkscape recognizes quite easilly there's something wrong with assigned "Font family".

(see red strikethrought names)
I know the mess is a bug from some CAD software, but Inkscape let it be and forward the bug further.
The "font-family" string can be manually rewrited in XML Editor (Shift+Ctrl+X), but it's quite a lot of work at some huge drawings with many text fields.
It would be great to edit the imported font-families with svg... all for once ;)
