In Illustrator, a letter, such as a bold letter B, can be cut into several pieces, those pieces can then be moved around and manipulated individually. Can this be done in inkscape and if so does anyone have any idea how to achieve this?

I know a letter can be converted to a path and the path can then be changed and/or manipulated. What I am looking for is being able to take the letter apart. To cut it into pieces then move them around.

If not, is there a way to erase part of a letter?

Thank you in advance for your time and knowledge.

Going crazy over an assignment for illustator. My instructor said I can use Inkscape at home if inkscape has the same functions as Illustrator. Up to this point it has been great.

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Well, I suppose if the background is to be opaque, you could draw some tiny shapes to cover up parts of the letter, and color them to match the background. But it wouldn't work if the background is to be transparent. And you couldn't move the pieces around, because really there aren't any pieces.

The only way to cut a letter into pieces, and be able to move the pieces around, is to convert it to a path. Then there may be a few different ways to cut into pieces. By using node editing, you can break the path as needed, and reconnect the open ends. Or you could use some path operations. Or the Eraser tool.

Without knowing any details about exactly how you want to cut the letter, I would suggest using the Eraser tool. First do Object menu > Object to path. Then set the Eraser tool into Cut Out mode, and set the width of the eraser. You could set it wider, and just wipe out large areas. Or you could set it very narrow, to just slice across the letter a few times, to make pieces.

But if you need something more precise, just let us know the particulars, and we can advise about path operations :D
