Help filling traced drawing

Postby ryan1982 » Thu Apr 24, 2014 4:37 am

Hello!
Im new to the forum and to inkscape.
I have figured out how to use the bezier tool and trace images but I am having some issues filling objects.
As you can see in the image below when I try to fill the object, the color goes outside the lines.
I tried grouping everything which doesnt seem to work. I also tried messing with the path functions but i can t figure out the issue.
I've looked through the forum a little and did a google search but cant seem to find anything.I
f someone knows what the issue is or has a helpful link they could post I would greatly appreciate it!!

Welcome aboard!

On your image you have an open path selected.
What you would need is a compound path from closed paths, to add a right fill attribute to the object.
So the tools you need is the node editor, the combine paths (Ctrl+K), and the reverse path direction options.
See the non-zero fill rule described here:

Thanks for your reply Lazur.
I tried combining the paths and then reversing the path direction but still have the same issue. I feel like I'm missing something.

Sorry maybe my explanation wasn't clear.

First, you need simple closed paths.
Possibly those holes are closed paths already, that you could fill with any colour.
So it is the outermost edge of the drawing, that would need the editing:
Combine the parts of it together, then use the node editor tool to merge nodes/connect unconnected nodes and delete unnecessary ones.
To add the missing drops, you would need to combine them to that previous path, add some nodes here and there,
unconnect nodes and merge others.

After each part of the drawing is a closed path -the outer edge, the holes, the crosses- you can combine them together, to make a compound path. It's rendering is based on the fill rule, defined by the subpaths direction, so possibly you would need to reverse only the outer edge's direction before combining.
-Reversing path direction can be done on subpaths too once they are combined together, but it's easier to window select before combining.

Ok that makes sense.
Ive gone through and deleted some extra nodes which seems to be working already.
I combined the outside area on the right side that had the color filled outside the lines which now fills INSIDE the lines.
Now I just have to go through and fix a few other areas.
Thanks for your help Lazur I will post pics of an updated image.
