How do I obtain a lifted paper effect?

Postby pringuette » Mon Sep 24, 2012 2:32 pm

I figured out how to do a peel effect but I really like the look and feel of the slightly raised and shadowed effect on this business card. Looking to replicate that with some other work.

Thanks!

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

So you mean how it looks like there's a dark strip of paper (printed with Maria H. etc) and the right side of it is slightly raised up? That really should not be very hard to do. Here are general steps, and if you need details, let us know.
1 -- Draw the straight strip of paper.
2 -- Before you do anything else to it, duplicate it. Move the duplicate to the bottom and give it the color you want for the shadow (dark gray probably, maybe black) and a little blur.
3 -- Tweak the strip of paper object so that it looks slightly curled or curved. In your sample image, you would curve the right side of it up slightly.
4 -- Duplicate it after you have it just right.
5 -- This duplicate will be the clipping path, and will have to be further tweaked. Make it partially transparent, to help with the tweaking. The area that you need to tweak on the duplicate is the same area you tweaked on the main paper object. Grab the nodes in that area and drag them outward until they are nowhere near the blurred shadow object. Be sure not to touch the straight part, and only tweak the part that represents the curled end of the paper.
6 -- Select the 2nd duplicate (clipping path) and the blurred shadow. Then Object menu > Clip > Set. (This gets rid of the blur that was showing around the straight part, which makes it appear to be flat; and leaves the blur under the curled part, making it look like it's raised.

It should work fairly well, just like that. But if the image is to show this as if it were in a low lighting situation, you may want to duplicate the paper strip again, and use it to put a very faint shadow over the curled area.

I think there's a tutorial for this at screencasters. There'a link to the site in my forum signature, and then you can search for the tutorial. :D
