Converting raster to vector

Postby TheKevinShow » Mon Apr 22, 2013 7:38 am

First of all, I'd like to reiterate my thanks to those of you who assisted me with my last topic. I've definitely gotten a lot better thanks to the help therein.

Now I want to move onto the next step of the learning process. I'm still working on some logo-related stuff. While I can find a lot of SVG logos on Wikipedia, not all of the logos I need are available as SVGs. They're only available in raster form, ranging in format from PNG to JPG to GIF. Obviously I'd like them in vector. I can't simply go around constantly asking someone else to convert rasters to vectors. It's something I need to know myself to cut out the middleman and increase my skill set.

This is the Vancouver Canucks' shoulder patch logo. On Wikipedia, it is a PNG.

I know that the first step is to use Trace Bitmap. Where do I go from here?

You better not use auto-tracing. It will not give you paths with a good topology, what this kind of drawings need.
The next step would be node editing. Basically the same thing that you would do when drawing things manually.

Edit:
Attached some guiding on the workflow.

Oh, OK. So I need to trace the objects myself? I suppose something like that was inevitable.

Hi.

Hand Tracing a simple image as this is quick.
Al least quicker than "fixing" the a autotraced image.

See attached file for example, still needs a little node "fixing".

Alright, maybe I should try with a slightly simpler image. Let me see if I can find a good example.

Maybe this would work.

That image is small for auto-tracing.
See the inner parts of that "G", the small cuts in the "A"'s background.
Even if you go with no optimalisation, it wont give you "exact" result.
In my opinion auto-tracing is useless for such accurate works.
On a side note, those "R"'s right leg doesn't follow the font's style. And there are some other problems with the background.

Well, the way I see it, tracing that one would be easier since I'd just have to trace the white blocks and then trace the red layers over them.
