Extensions still don't work in Snow Leopard and 0.48

Postby Rig Out » Tue Sep 14, 2010 3:14 am

The extensions still don't work in Snow Leopard. I've been waiting quite a while to have this bug fixed and I was sure Inkscape 0.48 would fix the issue. I've read some of the other posts but none seem to indicate when this bug will be fixed.

I presume this bug page here: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/482993 is the main source of info regarding the bug. I can't see an official date or release version when the bug will be fixed.

Can anyone say if/when it will be fixed?

Thanks

if -> yes, when -> no date set

Hopefully the next release (0.48.1) will include a fix, but there is no date set for finding a valid solution for the issue with the bundled python modules on Snow Leopard nor for releasing an updated 0.48.1, afaik.

Thanks for the reply ~suv. It seems like an awfully long time since this issue was highlighted and it looks like getting it resolved may take even longer!

You don't happen to know why there is such a big delay... is it an extremely complicated issue to fix?...not enough developers to cover OS X programming?.... OS X not a priority for Inkscape development team?

AFAIU the delay in parts is due to only few active developers for the osx port, limited resources (time) of the current osx packaging manager, and solving the issue beyond a workaround [1] is not trivial (see Michael's comment #6).

[1] some technical details as far as I understand them (# referring to comments in bug #482993):
  • Enforcing the use of the 32bit Python 2.5 instead of the default 64bit Python 2.6 version on Snow Leopard (#11, #17, #28-35) would be a temporary workaround at most: reported to cause extreme slowdowns when executing even trivial scripts, no long-term solution for newer Python versions, doesn't address the other issues:
  • The way python modules are bundled with the Inkscape application on osx and imported into scripts executed in the spawned python process needs to be refactored, due to other internal changes in packaging - not limited to Snow Leopard (#11, #28):
    • the bundled python modules fail when Inkscape calls e.g. 32bit Python 2.6 installed via MacPorts due to conflicting library versions (#5),
    • importing the corresponding python modules installed via MacPorts instead fails too, unless the current launcher shell script inside the application package is edited ($PYTHONPATH) (#13) or the bundled python modules are removed from the package (#19).
  • Updating the outdated 'lxml' and 'numpy' packages to the current versions for all supported platforms (PPC, i386, x86-64): difficulties to compile portable site-packages as mentioned in #6.

~suv, thanks for the detailed reply.

It's easy for me to sit back and enjoy the benefits of great open source programs like Inkscape and quite presumptuous to some how feel hard-done-by when a bug isn't addressed in a time frame that suits me!!!

It's great to have some more info on this bug and I am grateful that you have confirmed that it hasn't slipped off the agenda. Thanks.

If you download lxml (I used 2.2.8), unpack and cd, then run
$ which python
it should show /usr/bin/python

Next, run
$ sudo python setup.py install

Everything should now work fine on Snow Leopard, which already has a native numpy.

Thanks for the post, none, but that's waaay over my head. I'm relatively new to OS X and Terminal etc is way beyond me. But thanks any way :)

There is a recent development snapshot with a fix available for those who would like to test extensions on Snow Leopard: the download link is in comment #59 of Bug #482993 “Inkscape extensions do not work on MacOS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)”.

Note: it is the most recent version from the development branch (not as stable as a release version), but if confirmed, the fix will be in 0.48.1 (to be released soon).
