Sketch it up!

Postby Lazur » Wed Apr 23, 2014 4:35 am

There was a topic here asking for a sketched up looking vector style.
-mentioned topic-

My previous experience was sketching can be hardly covered in a small amount of time with inkscape.
But should it be?

Let's have a series of competitions on quick sketches, to prove it is totally possible!

To start off, I suggest the theme of the forest, and a wild animal, for example:

Image

Hmm what should be the time limit, something short -maybe 15 minutes?
What do you think?
Look at the clock while drawing, and try not to go out of that limit.
The concept is similar to blenderartist forum's speed modelling contests.

Can you make some sketches of that image in fifteen minutes, and post it up here, so then we could choose the best looking sketch?

Some rules on the style: use black strokes only on a white background, and no filtering effects.
That way the technic shows up more.

Good luck, time for sketching!

Looks good!

The dropbox links need the www part replaced to dl, then it shows fine -about 600px in width is preferred by the forum's layout.

About 400 strokes with a pencil tool, pattern along path lpe from clipboard, and a 9,2 MB svg.
It worked better than I expected but could go on with this for an hour more.
Maybe it is slower for me because detailed working in real time has some "lag" on my computer.

Gave it another try:

67 strokes

144 strokes

52 strokes

Done with the pencil tool. Not yet experimented with the sketch live path effect, as it needs to be added once the stroke is already made.
Any idea, how to hype this topic up?
Was the example image too complicated for rotoscoping?

Edit: decided to upload the original svg-s, wasn't sure about it due to the large filesize.
Oh wait, let me think it over. Changed the inkscape preferences for a larger accuracy in some previous works, thus more digits are saved, resulting in much bigger sizes than what it would take for a regular sketch.
And changing back the accuracy to regular may solve the "lagging".
These svg-s are now hosted at openclipart, hopefully they can take such heavy duty.

Just another try.

I think I've break the rules. To get this result must have taken me a couple of hours, trying different settings. My idea is to obtain some kind of ink- water color effect, but just using bluring, because the filter editor is ugly

Great!

Still with the amount of time afforded it looks like a quick sketch.
You used the bend live path effect, that alone is more challenging.

As long as the drawing is not made with the pen tool as closed shapes, filled paths, and countless node editing with the node tool to achieve a "quick brushed" look, it's all good.

I haven't really played around with the sketch lpe -or others- as it doesn't appear to the freehand drawn lines automatically.
Maybe some day.
Will try it though anyway a bit later.

This time it's only the sketch live path effect.
Played around with it a bit before -by drawing trees on a map-, it does seem to have alot of potential in my opinion, no matter the produced rendering issue.
A bit different look though, it has a closer look and working logic to painting than to drawing.

Bit different, no sketching but auto-hatching.
Still between 15 minutes for one image, after some preparing.
Idea came from this topic.

The hatching lpe was used to create the base pattern. Not much control on an even tone, so it can be improved.

Hi Lazur,
I know this is an older post however I stumbled upon it and found it interesting. However, I don't seem to understand how you (and others) achieved such variety in your strokes. I have tried using live path effects>stroke and achieved a marginal sketch/brush stroke feel but no where near the variation seen in the drawings on this post.

Could you tell me what other steps you did (generally speaking) to achieve the sketch/brush stroke style?

thanks so much

I'm not sure what you mean by "live path effects>stroke". For some of them, I would guess Lazur used Pattern Along Path. Probably the first ones were done with pap. This tutorial might get you started: http://verysimpledesigns.com/vectors/in ... wirls.html

But these last few, I'd love to know how he did it!

Hi.

These may give a boost:
1
2.

Will be available at inkscape communiti articles soon.
Edit: here it is http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=29.

Since my last post with the sketch lpe I found a better solution, as you can use a path with a sketch effect as a pattern to the pattern along path lpe. Alot of possibility on shading /and crashing of high node count.

But to get back on track with season, let's change from Taurus to Sagittarius: let's make the image an oak tree, this for example:
Image
http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/view-image.php?image=64930&picture=fa&large=1

Oh and by the way, those images were all linked original svg-s.
You could select one stroke, open the xml editor (Ctrl+Shift+X), go to the line "inkscape:path-effect" look up the #path-effectxxxxxxxx shown there in the defs section, which is the core of the lpe.
Should be copytype single_stretched and effect skeletal in the first two row.
Copy the values from the pattern line to clipboard.
Draw any kind of regular path, and paste the values to the d attribute's values and set it, which will draw exactly the pattern that was used with the lpe.

The hatching effect is a complete different story.

Yeah, it's the hatching effect I'm after!

Maybe I'll try the tree sketch, although I'm really not good at sketching. Can't hurt to try though....?

Hi Lazur and Brynn,
Thank you both for your thoughts and comments..
And Lazur, thank you so much for posting a guide to the some of the brush effects on open clipart. (although, it seems to me the links for 1 and 2 are the same...) at any rate, I'm definitely going to have to spend some time reviewing the techniques you showed.
I appreciate it.

Made these two stroke svg-s, taking advantage of the envelope deform and the interpolate subpaths lpe recently:
