Simple or complicated? ...help!!

Postby timbucktoo » Thu May 23, 2013 8:41 pm

Ok, first post, so I hope some one is going to be able to help me with my problem.

Ok, I have created some designs in inkscape which I am wanting to feature in a photo frame in a living room/bedroom/lifestyle setting which I have taken with my camera.

After importing the file of the said "photo" into inkscape, file format is (.png) - how do I then feature my inkscape creation in the photo frame so that it looks seamless?

Hope someone can help?! Thanks in advance! I'm tearing my hair out!

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Yeah, someone was talking about doing that recently. I don't get it, but apparently people like to have such a feature on the website where they sell their images.

If the photo of the wall where you want your Inkscape image to appear, is perfectly perpendicular to the camera position, AND your camera position was directly horizontal to the place where the Inkscape image would hang (not higher or lower), then you'll just need to scale your Inkscape image to fit it's place on the photo of the wall.

However, if you took the photo at any angle except 90 degrees, or your camera position was higher or lower than horizontal to the image's position on the wall, you'll need to use the photo to create a path which represents the proper perspective. Then use that path with Perspecitve extension, to put your image in the same perspective as the wall in your photo. So that way the Inkscape image looks like it belongs in the photo.

I suppose we could help you create that path to use with Perspective extension, if you want to provide the photo.

Crop your pic well, using GIMP or other photograph software, then open or import it into Inkscape. I would suggest having at least 2 layers, place the photo in the topmost layer and your Inkscape frame in a lower layer. Some people create a white rectangle under the photo - which then simulates a poloroid photo. A trick to make it look more realistic would be to have a border just under the pic that has the same color as is in your pic. Be sure to center or place the pic(s) well into your digital frame, and crop your pic to the same style as it's border, i.e., square or oval, etc.

I would use only gimp for such purpose.
Like, you can add more realistic feel by not masking out all the frame, but adding an element to the front space.
A Ming vase on the table for an example, that covers a bit from your image can add more depth.
Same with layer modes, tone adjustments, blurring.
If you don't need high-resolution image on that -as your base image is a photograph-, leave inkscape this time and head to gimp, I suggest.
If you need high-resolution images, you better draw a vector copy of the frame.
