3d Blocks

Postby Trake » Sun Mar 12, 2017 8:19 am

Now this may seems stupid, but I'm not going to use the format that's given for me to use, because the last time I sued a similar format, everyone completely missed the point of what I was trying to say. I'm also just here for a somewhat quick answer to a problem I've been having for a while. So apologies if this upsets you.

So my question is, is how would I make 2 3d blocks, opposite of each other easily, and lined up correctly, without going through a tedious process.I couldn't line up the 3d blocks exactly or good enough, so I needed a hole other layer for outlines, to hide that fact, which is not only tedious, but annoying. For example, I want to make a 3d hard cover book, but I need 2 3d blocks for that, however, 1 3d block is not the exact same as the other and no matter how I move the nodes, it doesn't become exact.

I'm not sure what you mean about the format that's given for you to use. Maybe it was a different website? In any case, I don't see anything upsetting about your question. Although we might need some more details....

I've tried to use the 3D Box tool in the past, to draw a bookshelf loaded with books. It was very frustrating! Still never finished it. I've also made 2 different drawings of 3D hardcover books, without using 3D Box tool. So I would be glad to offer you some other ideas (with or without 3D Box tool), but first, I need to understand exactly what you want to do.

When you say you want two 3D boxes opposite each other, does that mean you want them side by side and mirrored? I hear what you're saying about a 3D hardcover book. But I can't see 2 boxes side by side and mirrored really working to make a book, so it must be something else.

Oh!! Do you mean a book that's standing up, like it was on a bookshelf? I was thinking a closed book lying on a table. Are the 2 boxes going to be the front and back covers? Or one box for the front cover and a box to represent the pages? Or do you mean a book on a table, that's opened up to the middle of the book, and each side is a 3D box? Mirroring could work for that.

Or if you have a sample image of something like what you want, that would work instead of answering all my questions. Once I understand what you want to do, I can offer suggestions :D

Yeah, laying down on the table, in this fashion: https://gyazo.com/020eb6887c293d6c08e516183b42c1d9
Except, not as tall, with the other side of the book on the right side.

Hhmm.... That image doesn't look like it's lying on a table. But I think I get the idea now.

Let me ask another question. After you have the 2 sides, do you plan on editing the 3D Box any further? If not, there's a simple solution.

-- Select the first side that you made. Path menu > Object to Path (makes it into a Group of paths, and no longer has any 3D Box controls) (use Selection tool now)
-- Duplicate
-- Hold Ctrl key while you drag the duplicate over to the side (Ctrl keeps horizontal as you drag)
-- Flip Horizontal (this button on Selection control bar Image )

Then if you really need the edges to meet precisely, you can use Snapping. Or if not, you can just drag them together. If you use the Ctrl key, you can make sure you're dragging exactly horizontal, and the corners will meet perfectly.

If you need both sides to retain the 3D Box controls, I have no idea how to accomplish this. Someone who understands how to use the vanishing points and/or handles, and/or other features would need to explain.

One thing that you'll possibly want to keep in mind is that there are 6 objects which create the box. You can only see 3 at a time, and the other 3 are behind. I just wanted to mention it, because editing can get confusing sometimes, if you don't realize they are there. (When I was making the bookshelf drawing, with probably a couple hundred of them on the page (floor to ceiling bookcase), I had to delete the 3 hidden objects on all of them, to keep the file from being double in size!)

Just fyi, I could go over a process to make this kind of drawing, without using 3D Box tool at all. It would not have perspective, which 3D Box produces. Or at least not correct perspective. But it sounds like that might not be important in this case. Anyway, let me know.

Mmmm... not sure about 3d boxes for an open book. A cloned group could work for mirroring:

Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Thanks, this should help a lot. Also jsut tried it, and it's exactly what I was looking for, thank you!
