"Cut Path" doesn't work and I cannot find a tutorial on this subject ....

If I understand what you're asking correctly, this is what I would do:
1) Copy the path if you don't want to affect the original.
2) Click on the line at the top so that the top two nodes become selected.
3) Click the "Delete segment between two non-endpoint nodes" button in the toolbar (sixth icon).
4) Assuming the two nodes are still selected (select them again if they're not) press the delete button.
5) Optionally set a stroke and remove the fill to be left with just the curved stroke.

Thank you very much, Xav - that is what I need as I need to use the stroke for some scattered objects and place them along the filled object above
