Make text transparent on image

Postby Mojo » Mon Sep 05, 2016 7:14 am

Hello,

Newbie here - Yay! I have tried to find the answer here in the forum but can't seem to find it specifically.

I have an png image that has been supplied to me - it is a solid white Australia with a transparent car around the edge.

I am trying to put transparent text on it (for a tshirt) but it is just not happening.

Is there an easy way to select transparent for text just like you might select green or blue?

I have also tried selecting both the image and the text and using - Path - Difference. Whilst this worked fine for a coloured box I drew, it did not work on the imported image.

Do I need to convert the image to something else to enable the path/difference option to work?

Thanks for your time - appreciate your help.

Here's what I would do:

- Draw a rectangle bigger than your PNG.
- Draw the text and Path > Substraction, so you are left with a rectangle with a "hole" in the shape of the text.
- Move rectangle on top of the PNG.
- Select both and Object > Clip > Set.
- Your are left with a PNG that is visible only in the areas where the rectangle was showing, and since this rectangle had a "hole" in the middle, your PNG won't be visible there.

Now, that works as a visual thing. I'm not sure it will work with the printing machine they use to produce the T-Shirt. Those thing sometimes look more at the "internal logic" of the image rather than the visual.

Hi Uktrunie,

Thanks for your reply. I just did as you suggested and it worked (not that I know what I was doing because I am still learning so much about inkscape - haven't used Object > Clip> set before). I was then able to upload it to the Tshirt printer and it still did what I wanted - top job and thnx.
