opening F/S dialog forces small window to max

Postby brynn » Wed May 30, 2012 6:53 pm

Hi Friends,
The first time this happened, I thought it was just a little glitch or something. But it routinely happens. If I have an Inkscape Window that is not maximized (or minimized) (i.e. the "restored" size) and I open the Fill and Stroke dialog, the window is automatically maximized. I haven't found any other dialog which causes this to happen. Just Fill and Stroke.

Is this worth reporting at Launchpad? This is 0.48.1 on Win7, 64-bit. Or maybe it's been fixed?

Thanks for your help :D

Edit
Oops, it seems to also happen when opening the Gradient Editor. I know that the gradient editor will eventually be eliminated, so probably not worth mentioning. But I still wonder about Fill/Stroke dialog.

Interesting.....it seems the F/S dialog always causes the window to max. Other dialogs sometimes do and sometimes don't cause this. When I was testing the other day, the Layers dialog did not cause the window to go max. But today, it did. The other day, the gradient dialog caused the window to go max, but today, it doesn't.

Still not sure if this is worth reporting, since most people probably work in a maximized window. Since recently learning that the Windows Photo Viewer displays colors slightly differently than Inkscape (viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11835) I imported the reference photo into another Inkscape doc. I work in the first Inkscape window, at the "Restore" size, with the other Inkscape doc which has the photo alone, also opened at the "Restore" size, side by side. The first thing I do after I open the 2 docs, is set the windows to the proper size. But once I start opening dialogs, I have to resize the window.

I guess the much requested feature for better windows management, is on its way. I'm not sure if it will turn up in 0.48.3, or not until 0.49. But it will be nice when Inkscape can open with the same dialogs I had open when I last closed the file. That will essentially solve this problem, but not truly solve it. Even if it opens with the dialogs that I used last time, I might need to open another one, and possibly have to resize the window again.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Thanks again :D

More thoughts :D

Starting with either 0.48 or 0.48.1 (I can't remember) I started seeing something like a bug, but I couldn't always reproduce it, so I haven't reported it. I used to always use the middle of the 3 buttons at the top right corner of windows, to make a window the "restore" size (as opposed to minimized or maximized). But suddenly (with whichever new version) using that button, the "restore" button, it would minimize an Inkscape window, and it could not be brought back up except with maximize. Sometimes that would happen and sometimes it didn't, and I couldn't figure out why. And I couldn't always reproduce it.

Then I found out about what I think is a feature that's unique to Windows 7, where you can grab any maximized window by the titlebar and drag a tiny bit, and it's automatically made to the "Restore" size! Personally, I hate that feature, simply because it appears to confuse Inkscape.

Anyway, I think it depends on how the non-maximized, non-minimized window (i.e. "Restore" size) got to be that way, as to whether opening a dialog will maximized a "restore" size window. But it's so confusing, that I still can't find reproducable steps.

Still testing.....:D
