Saving in xcf format (or anything that maintains layers) ?

Postby annabv » Sun May 02, 2010 8:08 pm

Hi All,
I use both Gimp and Inkscape frequently, and would like to find out how I can save multi-layer drawings in Inkscape in a fromat that Gimp can read. There is a "Save as GIMP xcf (maintaining layers)" option in Inkscape, but it doesn't work for me. I save a file as xcf, but then Gimp can't open it. I can't even open it in Inkscape again (I got this message: Failed to load requested file.)
Any ideas what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance,

ANna

I don't have Inkscape loaded onto this new laptop yet, so I can't experiment or refer to Inkscape for details. But I know this question has been asked before in these forums. So the most promising thing I can suggest is to search the forums.

If I recall, and I'm not sure that I do, I think one can export layers as PNG (Export Bitmap). That would still require an extra step or few converting back to XCF, and importing to GIMP (probably not in that order). Or I think GIMP can open SVG. I guess you've tried that without success? But until someone with the proper knowledge replies, try searching. I'll also search, and edit in links when I find them.

Edit - here's the relevant topic viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1272
