How-To Create objects with different colors (hues) from a selected object (group of many simple colored objects)

Postby DoomerDGR8 » Mon Jan 18, 2016 5:17 am

Hi!

I'm working with Kenny's game assets and am trying to get more color options with a particular block object from his Inkscape file:

Image

These, along with four more blocks, are already available in the file but I need to add more colors like pink, red, and violet. Now, these are three objects but with at lease three different shade of the same color. Is there an easy way to change the color so that the shades are taken care of automatically i.e. work on the block object only and not handle the three objects separately?

I have Photoshop available apart from Inkscape.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Yes, this should be possible using the extension 'Color -> HSL adjust...'

Ok. Testing right now. Also, tried the Filter > Color > Color Shift as well. partially worked but Inkscape closes suddenly every time and the results are bit limited in terms or colors.

Inkscape won't allow me. It says data was returned. That may not indicate an error but also no results and that is true,,. nothing is happening.

@DoomerDGR8: Could you upload the file, describe which objects you are using the extensions with and how you select them? Maybe you are trying to use it with an object which can't be modified by the extension. Or maybe there's a tiny change you need to make to make it work. Or there could be a bug.

For me the easiest way is to set light part overlay to 50%white and shadow overlay to 50%black - group all 3 parts together - select main color object only with ctrl+LMB-click and change color accordingly - thing of few seconds:

Yeah, that's how I'd do it with objects I made myself, too - fastest method in that case!

This is amazing! Here is the file I'm working with: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=D ... 8%21650386

I didn't create this file. It's from a public domain. Does you idea applies to this as well?

Sure and it will skip the anti-aliasing gap between the parts as it uses light+shadow parts as layered objects
First you need to duplicate the parts and merge them to one object - you can now use the light+shadow parts as overlaid objects with transparent colors like shown here:

Hope it makes it more clear.

Nice! I'm trying to replicate what you've shown. Just struggling with the layerings. A bit of a noob in InkScape actually.

Now that you mention the rendering issue of anti-aliasing, keep in mind the problem is still present at the "double edges".
To avoid it completely you could use clipping, where the clipped objects -the base colour and the shades- are overlapping the clipping edges.

If you look closely you´ll notice that is what I did and described as "layered objects"- look at the size of the main color object.

and will be.
The only vector.app I know that handles that situation very well is AdobeIllustrator.

Clipping vs layering.

(Image is oversampled/downsampled. Chrome renders the clipping badly.)
